Two Harps Are Better Than One
Since high school, Samantha has been playing with her mother, harpist Andrea Wittchen–because, ya know, mothers and daughters need more ways to drive each other nuts during the high school years. They’ve performed throughout Eastern Pennsylvania at retirement communities, church concert series and music festivals, including Bethlehem’s well-known Musikfest. Their harp duo programs span a range of musical genres, from classical to Broadway (with some ragtime and crazy modern stuff peppered in for good measure), and they almost always incorporate education about the instrument and a little comedy.
In 2002, the duo premiered a two-harp concertino, Earth Wind Fire, commissioned by Andrea and the Lehigh Valley Chamber Orchestra and written by composer Steven Sametz. In 2010, Dr. Sametz extended the concertino into a full-blown concerto, and the duo premiered this extended version with the Lehigh University Choral Orchestra. Have a listen to this amazing piece over here. ➡
But wait, I was only looking for one harp. That’s okay–head on over here.
