Plays Well With Others
Sam loves working with other musicians. Being a classically trained harpist, she’s spent lots of time in the back of the orchestra playing music written by dead, white Europeans (and Russians). She’s played with regional and university orchestras, but the fun stuff has been playing back-up for the likes of Olivia Newton-John (Let’s get physical!) and Connie Francis, as well as touring shows like Video Games Live. She excels at this kind of work where rehearsals are limited and flexibility is key. She’s also a bit of a musical theatre nerd, so she’s right at home in a pit orchestra.
In addition to orchestral work, Sam takes the harp to the people! She plays with a bunch of different bands in and around Philly at a variety of venues. Along with multi-instrumentalist Dan Nosheny, she makes up one-half of Dethhed, a harp/accordion (and sometimes ukulele and tuba) duo blending rock, indie, folk, jazz, pop & everything you never expected to hear on harp and accordion (which really is everything). She’s one of the women in 3 Men and 3 Women in Black, a Johnny Cash tribute band comprised of harp, guitar, violin, tuba, drums and vocals. She’s performed with Sweetbriar Rose and along with her sister and mother and Dan Nosheny (again…can’t get enough of that guy!), she’s one-quarter of The Wittchen Initiative.
Sam also loves to play chamber music. She and her mother, harpist Andrea Wittchen, present two-harp recitals and educational programs, and she frequently performs with violinist Alexandra Cutler-Fetkewicz. Sam also has a particular affinity for choral music and has accompanied choral groups throughout Eastern Pennsylvania. Her two absolute favorite choral pieces to perform are Britten’s Ceremony of Carols and Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms. (Go listen to them–they’ll change your life.)
